BET Networks is bringing one of America’s hottest party games to colorful life with the announcement of the new game show series, Black Card Revoked. Based on the party game of the same name, the nostalgia-filled show will test players’ knowledge of the nuances of the African American perspective – from pop culture milestones and entertainment moments to historical facts and politics. Actor and comedian Tony Rock will host the series, bringing his signature quick-witted style to the game play and challenging the contestants. Production will kick off in Los Angeles later this month, and the twelve-episode series will premiere January, 2018 on BET.

Since its creation by Cards For All People in 2015, Black Card Revoked has set social media on fire and quickly become a fixture at home parties. Although the African American experience is far from monolithic, the game is a lighthearted nod to the shared commonalities of Black life in America.  If you know the answer to questions like “How many fights did the Fresh Prince get into before his mom got scared?”, your metaphorical ‘Black Card’ will stay intact (“1 little fight,” of course).  But if you’ve never seen The Color Purple or Friday, you might get your card snatched!

This should be fun!

As a witty celebration of African American life, Black Card Revoked will appeal to all lovers of Black culture, bringing together viewers from diverse walks of life for a fun night of laughter and spirited debate.  Each 30-minute episode will feature three (3) teams – each with a celebrity and contestant partner – answering questions about universal pop culture and historical moments, viewed through the African American lens.  The teams will square off and put their figurative ‘Black Cards’ on the line for a chance to win up to $10,000.

Black Card Revoked was brought to BET by David A. Hurwitz, who will serve as Executive Producer for Alternative Productions, Inc. under his Bill’s Market & Television Productions banner. The original creators of the popular party game, Latesha Williams and Jay Bobo, will serve as Co-Executive Producers.

The movie is written by Abdul Williams and executive produced by Jesse Collins. The Bobby Brown Story will pick up where the New Edition mini series left off at. It will showcase the talented but troubled singer’s exit from the popular 80’s boy band on  through his solo career, his affair with Janet Jackson and tabloid-fodder marriage to pop icon Whitney Houston.  Covering thirty years of Brown’s life, the new project follows his story from the hard streets of Roxbury, where he turned to a life of drug dealing before being given the chance to prove himself as a solo artist. BET said The Bobby Brown Story also will be a story about redemption. Through sobriety, the singer learns to be a better man, husband and father. He even finds love again by remarrying in 2012. The casting for the movie is still under way for the other key players in The Bobby Brown Story, including Houston, Bobbi Kristina, Jackson, Teddy Riley, L.A. Reid, Babyface and others. McClain is repped by Henderson Represents, Luber Roklin Entertainment and Jackoway Tyerman.

For those who don’t know, Woody McClain was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and raised in Jacksonville, Florida before moving to Los Angeles in 2012 to pursue a career as a professional dancer. So of course it makes sense why he was able to nail those legendary Bobby Brown moves in the movie. He has since performed with numerous artists including Chris Brown and Fifth Harmony. After excelling in his career as a professional dancer, he began creating original social media content and noticed very quickly that he had a gift for making people laugh.

Woody also signed with Kevin Hart’s production company, ‘HartBeat Digital’, in December 2015 to produce content after his version of Hart’s “Permission to Cuss” skit went viral and caught Hart’s attention. Woody’s first venture into acting proved incredibly successful when he was sent to audition for BET’s The New Edition Story and booked the lead role, playing Bobby Brown. He will also be seen on the big screen in Canal Street playing “MayMay,” set to release in February 2018. His upcoming projects also include a role in USA’s series “Unsolved,” which is currently in production. Alongside his acting, Woody is currently executive producing his own creation titled Stories with Kev. He has teamed up with Kevin Hart for a streaming series in which he plays Kevin, based on Hart’s most iconic stories and stand-up bits. New episodes release every Friday on Hart’s #1-rated streaming video service, “Laugh Out Loud.”

2018 is going to be one amazing year for the handsome young actor and I’m grabbing my kettle flavored popcorn to tune in for every role!

Tyler Perry Inks Mega Film & Television Deal With Viacom

Via: Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: In one of the biggest talent deals under the new Viacom leadership, the company has signed a long-term pact with prolific writer, director, producer and actor Tyler Perry, which encompasses television, film and short- form video.

Under the agreement, Perry, who is currently under an exclusive deal at OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, will produce approximately 90 episodes annually of original drama and comedy series for BET, which caters primarily to African-American audiences, and other Viacom networks. Viacom will have exclusive licensing rights on the TV programming as well as exclusive distribution rights to Perry’s short-form video content. Additionally, the pact gives Paramount Pictures exclusive first-look rights on Perry’s feature film projects.

The TV pact is similar to Perry’s arrangement at OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network where he has been since 2012, helping to put the then-fledgling cable network on the original scripted series map with such series as The Haves And Have Nots, Love Thy Neighbor and For Better Or Worse. The film agreement is effective immediately, while the TV/short-form video one will kick in May 2019 when the OWN pact ends and will feature new series. Both parts of Perry’s Viacom deal will go through 2024.

“I am delighted that we are deepening our longstanding relationship with Tyler,”Debra L. Lee, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BET Networks, said. “BET co-funded Tyler’s very first feature film, we’ve aired his movies and many of his series with great success on our networks, and we’ve honored his tremendous talent with our signature awards. This partnership will allow us to work even more closely with him and bring more of his iconic content to our viewers.”
Congrats to Tyler Perry!

Ava DuVernay to Write and Direct a ‘Central Park Five’ Miniseries for Netflix

Ava DuVernay is turning the story of the Central Park Five into a miniseries for Netflix.

She will be writing and directing the five-part project about the notorious case of five young black men wrongly convicted of a brutal rape that took place in Manhattan’s Central Park during the spring of 1989.

via THR:

For DuVernay, it’s her second project at Netflix, after 2016’s Oscar-nominated documentary feature 13th, which focused on the criminal justice system, private prisons and the mass incarceration of black men in America.

“I had an extraordinary experience working with Netflix on 13th and am overjoyed to continue this exploration of the criminal justice system as a narrative project with Cindy Holland and the team there,” said DuVernay. “The story of the men known as the Central Park Five has riveted me for more than two decades. In their journey, we witness five innocent young men of color who were met with injustice at every turn — from coerced confessions to unjust incarceration to public calls for their execution by the man who would go on to be the president of the United States.”

Donald Trump was one of the most vocal during the Central Park Five witch hunt. He spent a reported $85,000 on full-page ads in the city’s major daily newspapers that called for New York to reinstate the death penalty. Even though evidence has since vindicated the five young men, Trump has referred to them as guilty as recently as 2016.

The five men — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise — were freed in 2002 after more than a decade behind bars when DNA evidence proved they were not responsible for the attack on Trisha Meili.

“This is one of the most talked-about cases of our time, and Ava’s passionate vision and masterful direction will bring the human stories behind the headlines to life in this series,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vp original content. “After powerfully reframing the public conversation about criminality and injustice in 13th, Ava now turns a new lens to a case that exposes deep flaws in our criminal justice system.”

The limited series will offer a breakdown of how the criminal justice system handled each phase of the infamous case, each part focusing on one of the five Harlem teenagers. It will span from 1989 to 2014. On board as executive producers are Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King from Participant Media, Oprah Winfrey and her Harpo Films, Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh from Tribeca Productions and DuVernay. It’s not the first time the Central Park Five have gotten the TV treatment. In 2012, Ken Burns tackled the subject matter in a longform PBS documentary.

DuVernay now seems to be just as focused on television as she is on her thriving film career. The second season of her critical darling Queen Sugar just premiered on OWN. On the movie front, 2017 will see the release of her big-budget adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time at Disney.
