Charmaine Johnise from VH1’s Black Ink Crew: Chicago Launches New Apron Line

Growing up as the only child has made Charmaine Johnise a little bit spoiled, the VH1 reality star admits in an exclusive interview on Starrdom100 Radio. But she is no stranger to hard work and creates her own opportunities.

What many didn’t know is that she is more than just a reality TV figure, as Johnise is a graduate of Howard University, host of an iHeart radio show, and has recently launched her own Apron Line. Due to the negative portrayal black women oftentimes get in the reality show business, the 28-year-old has garnered much praise for being a positive voice for women of color.

Johnise, who is set for the new season of Black Ink Crew: Chicago, gives a little insight into what will take place on the next show, and talks more about her entrepreneurial endeavors in an exclusive interview on Starrdom100 Radio.

What can we expect on Season 5 of Black Ink Crew: Chicago?

“If you thought Season 4 was crazy. Just wait until Season 5, like you really haven’t seen anything yet. It gets even crazier. But the good thing is that we all join forces back together again, like at some point. So, you know, we are trying to make things work out, you know as a unit with the people that started this. Just remembering like who 9 Mag is and why it started and what it was built on… and you know the teamwork and the efforts; we’re going back to that. But honey the drama…we wouldn’t be number one without drama. Let’s just say that so, you know reality TV is the new soap opera. So just be tuning in every Wednesday. We air in January 2019, I don’t know the exact date yet, but be ready for that!”

Going into this new season, what can you say you’ve learned about yourself from last season?

“Something I’ve learned probably is that I’m a little spoiled (laughing) but you know, I’m the only child, and you know how that goes. Something that’s different is I’m just stepping up like in every way. Like people are going to take me serious this season. I’m not going to say hey guys take me serious and they’re laughing behind my back like, you know, you need to get with the program or we don’t have to do this. Other than that, you know, I’ve been taking some boxing classes! (Laughing)  I’m always bringing the best of the best of myself to the TV. So, you know just definitely look out for that for sure.”

You have a new Apron Line out, Tell me about that.

“Yes, I created them myself as far as like the ideas and everything behind it. And yes, it’s really cute stuff like something for everybody. I got aprons for men and women. Some of the aprons say “Wakanda Food You Like”, “Real Men Get Down In The Kitchen”, “Chop It Like It’s Hot” and more. So everybody can get those at http://www.allthingsCharmaine.com. I also have an App coming out that’s going to showcase a lot of my life and cooking videos. That’s going to be released in a few months. I’m focusing on a lot of holiday foods because I’m going to put out a holiday like cookbook as well soon.”

You recently shared your thoughts about how black women are betrayed on reality TV. What are your thoughts on that?

“So basically it’s crazy because I think women in general are kind of portrayed in a crazy light on Reality TV period! I just think women in general are expected to…you know, do the most on TV, whereas men can kind of fall in the background. Women are expected to bring all the messy and all the gossip. I do think that you know, with black woman unfortunately, they look to us for the ratchet and that ghetto turn up. How they’re portrayed is crazy, but we’re also giving that to them too. So we can’t even blame TV because if that’s the case, black women would have been stepped up to the plate. So I just think you know at the end of the day get your coin sis because I have my own reality TV situation. I haven’t handled everything perfect. And you know, sometimes I was in situations as well, but on the other end, you know, when you think about it… think about the footprint maternally for our kids and everything is not necessarily something that you know, you can be proud of all of your actions on TV. But hey, if you’re living in your true life and if that is true, you live life with no regrets and if that is truly yourself then that’s a whole different story.

Darrin Dewitt Henson initially rose to fame as one of the most notable characters on Showtime’s television series, Soul Food. Henson’s critically acclaimed portrayal of ex-convict-turned-businessman, Lem Van Adams, demonstrated his ability to connect deeply with urban audiences.

His work on Soul Food earned him subsequent roles in popular urban films Stomp the Yard and Life Support.  He has also had key roles ABC’s television series Lincoln Heights and more recently, the hit dramas, VH1’s  Single Ladies and BET’s Being Mary Jane. Take a look below at what he shared on Starrdom100 Radio!

Tanisha Davis: “So I’m excited about this new TV series, can you tell me a little bit more about it?”

Darrin D. Henson: “Sure, “The Family Business” which airs on BET at 9 pm on Tuesdays is about the Duncan’s family, an exotic car business-owning family, successful black family in NYC who is in the business of cars and other businesses, and as you know in business where there is success there is also jealousy. So there is jealousy within the family, outside of the family, and there is war going on with different cartels you know, but the Duncan family is the new family on the block to watch out for.”

Darrin explained how there are obstacles that come in the world of business and being successful in the family.  So with the Duncan family there is a lot of trouble within the family and outside of the family.

Now let’s get to know the character he plays!

Tanisha: So you play Orlando Duncan, can you tell me a little about your character?

Darrin: “Orlando is next in line to run the family business. The first episode shows that he is going to be the recipient of the business from his father and again it raises eyebrows and makes other family members jealous, you know, LC  Duncan has had a long-standing relationship with the  exotic car business as well as the narcotic business so, its raising jealousy within the family itself.”

Tanisha“This sounds kind of like a mafia-style family”

Darrin: “This family is not to be messed with!”

We can tell this new series is going to keep you entertained and questioning what’s going to happen next.

Tanisha: What drew you to this project because I know its based on Carl Weber’s book so what made you want to be apart of it?

Darrin: Well, I worked with Tri Destined who is the producing company behind the film, many many times, I also worked with Carl Weber many times, so reading the books working with Carl and working with Tri Destined, then reading about this particular show and seeing that its so well developed, and the characters are well developed…who wouldn’t want to play Orlando Duncan?! Its an opportunity to do great work and tell great stories.”

Darrin then explains how the cast is the best part about going into work every day because there is a great group of people to work along side of.

Tanisha: How would you describe the Duncan family?

Darrin: The Duncan’s family is not to be played with,  Sean Ringgold who plays my big bro…plays the enforcer. He is literally ready to smash heads, you can see in the first  episode that’s what we did, we smashed heads.’

Tanisha: Whats the relationship behind scenes with the cast, are you guys having a lot of fun?

Darrin: We are literally like family there’s no question that its a family.

Tanisha: Out of all of the characters that you have played in other movies, what do you like most about this character?

Darrin: Orlando is the real deal, he’s smart, strategic, he loves his family, he’s an entrepreneur and he’s ready for more, he’s a well-developed character with human flaws which is great because we can see how he unfolds hopefully for the next 10 years.

Tanisha: Are there any upcoming projects with you, I know you have a movie for Thanksgiving?

Darrin: Yes, its called Nothing Like Thanksgiving, it’s going to be on the AMC channel.  Im very excited about people seeing it, its about love & life… and once again FAMILY its one to watch on Thanksgiving Day.

Christopher Martin of “KID N’ PLAY” Discusses His Journey in the Music Industry & New Hip-Hop Film Documentary!

Related image

During the late 1980’s and early 1990’s the voices of Hip-Hop were starting to be heard across cultural and socio-economic lines bringing light to the street life. One of the crews that played a major voice in this era was the hip hop duo known as, Kid N’ Play.

Christopher Martin most popularly known as “Play” from the late 80s/early 90s Hip Hop duo, Kid N’ Play, is one of the iconic pioneers of the Hip Hop culture when it comes to music and dance! Christopher “Play” Martin along with co-member of the group, Christopher Reid formerly known as Kid, helped to pave the way and open doors to the social revolution of dance within the hip hop culture!

Outside of memorable lyrics and the group’s famous dances known as the Kick Step and the Funky Charleston, the group aided in bringing attention to the art and creativity of dance.

Classic films like ‘House Party’, ‘Class Act’ and even a popular animated 90s cartoon series based on the real life of the hip-hop duo, was just one of the many amazing creations behind the multi-talented group.

The New York native, Christopher Martin now has a new film documentary called, “ANDiDANCED” which is about the women and men who danced and helped to make a lot of the 80s – 90s rappers and singers performances exciting, and unforgettable. (ANDiDanced.com)

In the documentary, he plans to travel from city to city to speak with the dancers responsible for the videos, dance shows and images we enjoy til this very day. A few of the rap artists appearing in the documentary include, LL Cool J, NWA, Salt ‘n Pepa,  MC Hammer, Kool Moe Dee, MC Lyte, Naughty By Nature, Queen Latifah, Big Daddy Kane, Heavy D, Slick Rick, Kid N’ Play, and a host of others!

The executive producers of the show are Christopher “Play” Martin and Cheryl “Salt” James. Producers are Shane Johnson and Donielle Artese.

Recently I had the honor and the pleasure of interviewing the Hip Hop icon, Christopher Martin on my radio show (Starrdom100 Radio) and he discussed his journey into the hip hop culture as well as shed some light on his new film documentary, “ANDiDANCED.” As a 80s baby and true fan of Kid N’ Play, the experience was exciting! Take a brief look at a few excerpts from the interview below.

Christopher Martin 2

Tanisha Davis: Who was Christopher Martin before being known as “Play”?

“Christopher Martin was an accident waiting to happen. Coming up in the streets of New York, you didn’t have the images or the inspiration that you have today, especially in Hip Hop because it didn’t exist. Matter of fact it was an era and a time believe it or not on this planet where Hip Hop didn’t exist, and when it did begin to come, it wasn’t even called Hip Hop. So I wasn’t really relating to what was happening in the schools, I was more attracted to what was happening in the streets because that’s what looked like success for a young black boy or teenager. I was attracted to a lot of the negative elements in the streets, and that was becoming my aspiration and inspiration. My father was doing his thing successfully or so I thought in the streets, so I wanted to be with him and then combine that with the images I was seeing in the movie theaters. I was just going to be the best, I guess, criminal I could be and I flirted with that, tampered with that, and thank God he used something that was eventually going to be called Hip Hop to save my life.”

Tanisha Davis: You have a new documentary film called “AndIDanced” tell me about that.

“It’s something I have been working on for many years now, it took that long to be able to accomplish it. I have been traveling around the country and trying to find a lot of old friends to have great conversation with, which included many of the dancers who were responsible for the success of a lot of entertainers, rappers and singers……..It’s really just talking to them about how they started out in low budget videos and R&B videos that are now considered R&B & Hip Hop classics.”

Tanisha Davis: What are your thoughts on NBA player Lebron James doing a House Party remake?

“I think it’s great. Lebron James has always shown nothing but love for Kid and I. It’s very apparent how much he loves the work that we have done. There have been times where he has even posted pictures of his two sons with haircuts that he did to recreate the looks of Kid N’ Play. We did an Allstate commercial with him at one time, so he’s a great person, and I know what he is trying to do and what he is doing with accomplishing and trying to make a difference in entertainment. So no, I have no problem with that at all. They say the highest form of flattery is imitation.”
