Hip Hop Recording artist Yung Bleu recently opened up a new restaurant in Mobile, Alabama, my home town, called “Gwen’s House” which serves up mouth-watering soul food dishes and seafood!
Now I absolutely love soul food especially when it’s done right! I had the pleasure of stopping by the location to satisfy a soulful craving, and in my opinion, there are always just a few dishes that every soul food restaurant has to deliver their A-game on for me and those items are fried chicken, collard greens, candied yams, cornbread, and baked macaroni and cheese! If you can’t sweep me off my feet with those items then I can’t really rock with you! In my book I give Gwen’s House 5 stars, so allow me to share my experience and tell you why!
So I stepped into the restaurant which is beautiful by the way with my taste buds craving some soul food! My waitress (Tyler) was really professional and friendly and communicated with me and my guest often to make sure we enjoyed our food! I ordered some collard greens, fried chicken, and candied yams! The wait time was not long and soon our waitress came out with the food. By this time I’m staring at my plate and my mouth is like come through with the food already!
The first thing to hit my mouth was the collard greens and a nice piece of smoked turkey necks I assume. It was like a heavenly party in my mouth! The greens were cooked in my opinion to perfection!
Usually, I visit soul food restaurants where the collard greens are still crunchy or they haven’t cooked long enough but these were cooked to perfection and the only thing I was mad about is how fast they disappeared from my plate! The candied yams were sweet but not to the point where the sweetness overwhelms you. What I also loved is that the yams were nice and soft but not to firm. I’ve been places where the yams were undercooked and that my friend is like eating a raw potato covered in syrup.
My final taste was the fried chicken and honey it had a beautiful light crunch with some really great flavor! I just could not stop eating them even though my stomach was clearly full by this point with soulful goodness! I must admit that these wings took me into the itis zone and I found myself having to untighten my belt buckle!
I highly recommend that the next time you are passing through Mobile, Alabama and you have some soul food in mind, make your stop at “Gwen’s House” and tell them I sent you!
Special thanks to Chef Gwendolyn Crawford on such amazing food, and most importantly congratulations & special thanks to Yung Bleu for giving us all an opportunity to experience soulful flavors of his childhood!
