Entertainment Journalist Tanisha D. Davis Says “Gwen’s House” is Good For The Soul!

Hip Hop Recording artist Yung Bleu recently opened up a new restaurant in Mobile, Alabama, my home town, called “Gwen’s House” which serves up mouth-watering soul food dishes and seafood!

Now I absolutely love soul food especially when it’s done right! I had the pleasure of stopping by the location to satisfy a soulful craving, and in my opinion, there are always just a few dishes that every soul food restaurant has to deliver their A-game on for me and those items are fried chicken, collard greens, candied yams, cornbread, and baked macaroni and cheese! If you can’t sweep me off my feet with those items then I can’t really rock with you! In my book I  give Gwen’s House 5 stars, so allow me to share my experience and tell you why!

So I stepped into the restaurant which is beautiful by the way with my taste buds craving some soul food! My waitress (Tyler) was really professional and friendly and communicated with me and my guest often to make sure we enjoyed our food! I ordered some collard greens, fried chicken, and candied yams! The wait time was not long and soon our waitress came out with the food. By this time I’m staring at my plate and my mouth is like come through with the food already!

My yummy meal from Gwen’s House!

The first thing to hit my mouth was the collard greens and a nice piece of smoked turkey necks I assume. It was like a heavenly party in my mouth! The greens were cooked in my opinion to perfection!

Usually, I visit soul food restaurants where the collard greens are still crunchy or they haven’t cooked long enough but these were cooked to perfection and the only thing I was mad about is how fast they disappeared from my plate! The candied yams were sweet but not to the point where the sweetness overwhelms you. What I also loved is that the yams were nice and soft but not to firm. I’ve been places where the yams were undercooked and that my friend is like eating a raw potato covered in syrup.

My final taste was the fried chicken and honey it had a beautiful light crunch with some really great flavor! I just could not stop eating them even though my stomach was clearly full by this point with soulful goodness! I must admit that these wings took me into the itis zone and I found myself having to untighten my belt buckle!

I highly recommend that the next time you are passing through Mobile, Alabama and you have some soul food in mind, make your stop at “Gwen’s House” and tell them I sent you!

Rapper Yung Bleu Opens Up Restaurant in Mobile, Alabama

Rapper Yung Bleu shows love in his hometown city, Mobile Alabama by opening up a soul food restaurant. The restaurant he named, “Gwen’s House” is named after Bleu’s best friend’s mother, Ms. Gwen (Gwendolyn Crawford), who he says was like a second mom to him.

In a recent interview with Fox 10 News, the rapper states “Everybody went to Gwen’s house to either eat or stay there so it’s just a part of my culture growing up.”

The rapper is well known across the country for his music and now wants his supporters to experience a hint of his childhood.

He told Fox 10, “I want it to be like soul food and at the same time family orientated. That’s why I put the arcade games and the chill area,” he said. “I feel like soul food in a good area and setting…I feel like you can’t do anything but win.”

The restaurant recently had a soft opening on December 17 and the turn out was awesome. “Gwen’s House” is located on Government Blvd just east of Knollwood Drive in the same parking lot as Carmike Theaters. This is an awesome thing he has done and I’m definitely looking forward to supporting it!

Burger King Launches A Meat-Free ‘Impossible Whopper’

Fast food institution Burger King now sells an entirely meatless version of its flagship burger. This vegetarian version of the iconic Whopper burger is made with a plant-based burger patty that’s designed to look and taste just like beef. The Impossible Whopper is now available at 59 Burger King locations in the St Louis area and is set to appear at all of their 7,200 restaurants across the US should the trial period go off without a hitch.

The arrival of the Impossible Whopper is great news for the health conscious, as the meat-free option contains 15% less fat and 90% cholesterol than its beef-based cousin. However, costing about a dollar more than the regular Whopper, it’s a premium option for veggies and calorie-counters. Furthermore, the burger will still be topped with mayonnaise – which means it is unsuitable for vegans.

According to Burger King’s chief marketing officer Fernando Machado, neither the restaurant’s employees nor customers can tell the difference between the Impossible and regular Whopper. In a statement, Machado said, “people on my team who know the Whopper inside and out, they try it and they struggle to differentiate which one is which.”

The meatless patty used in the new Impossible Whopper is produced by Impossible Foods, who use a soybean root derivative to make a meat alternative called heme. When blended with other vegetarian ingredients, the plant-based product has a slightly nutty texture, like ground beef. The same recipe is used by the burger chain White Castle – although Burger King’s version has been specially crafted to resemble the Whopper.

Impossible Foods began developing their heme burger in an attempt to reduce global reliance on animal-based agriculture, which has a significant environmental impact. For example, new research suggests that without meat farming, the land covered by agriculture could be reduced by 75% globally – which is an are equivalent to the US, China, the European Union, and Australia combined – and still feed the entire world. Furthermore, Impossible Foods’ meat alternatives solve health concerns and ethical issues associated with meat consumption, whilst generating a tiny fraction of related greenhouse gas.

However, Impossible Foods’ success has not come without controversy. For example, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have claimed that the product isn’t as animal-friendly as it seems. According to a sting conducted by the animal rights group, Impossible Foods test their products on rats. In a blog post, PETA said that “it’s impossible for PETA to get behind the Impossible Burger,” claiming the product was unhealthy, immoral, and inferior to a competitor’s product.
