Sonia Lewis, is the first African American Female CEO of an award-winning business, The Student Loan Doctor LLC.
Lewis has been considered the people’s expert for all matters related to student loan debt repayment. She has been invited to share her expertise on many different platforms to include, The White House Briefing on Advancing Equity for Women and Girls of Color, and multiple colleges and universities. In the midst of educating others, she is a three-time self- published author, selling over 500 copies in the first year of print with her book titled, “31 Day Budget Guide”.
Student loan debt percentages in the United States increase consistently every year. Studies show that as of 2018, student loan debt exceeded $1.5 trillion! Sonia Lewis shared with me her reasons for wanting to get involved in this epidemic and ways we could better educate ourselves about student loans.
What inspired you to start a student debt repayment company?
“I started this company by accident. In 2014, I attended a class called, “Financial Peace University” by Dave Ramsey. The area that most people needed support with was student loans. Helping people create a game plan for their loans was something I had did within my previous employment.”
What services do you offer for those looking to repay their student loans?
“We offer all services as it relates to federal loans. We can assist in the early stages of private loan repayment. We can assist with finding affordable repayment options, consolidation and default rehabilitation.”
What is the biggest mistake you feel people make with getting student loans?
“The biggest mistake would be that people are not considering a rule of thumb: borrowing determination= career compensation. Meaning if the career’s yearly salary does not equal to the same or more than the expected debt accrued, it would probably not be a good idea to borrow the debt.”
What are your thoughts on the fact that as of 2018, student loan debt exceeded $1.5 trillion!
“I think that it is important to find creative and solution oriented ideas. Millennial’s and African American women are most likely to be affected negatively by the 1.5 trillion debt.”
Would you vouch for the United States to get rid of Student Loans & allow students to attend school for free? If so, Why? Or Why Not? (There are countries that offer free college education)
“I would vote yes for student loans to be cut if the plan for free college was amenable. Student loans provide students with Options. Free college could limit someone’s ability to choose their preference of education.”

Serving her Philly community as a mentor, motivational speaker, and community activist, she has started her business, Queening Mentorship Program, designed to help young girls. Over the course of eight weeks, they practice unity, self-love, learning to have a healthy self-image, as well as introductory education into entrepreneurship. For young males, she started a free 1-week program for basketball skills and development. During this training camp, they focus on goal-setting, love, humility, good sportsmanship, and demonstrations of leadership.
Her most recent community endeavors were creating a free credit workshop for black men ages 16 & up, and a college tour where she used her knowledge and experiences to help educate and guide our youth. She now is actively working to tour Pennsylvania Correctional Facilities to engage inmates in financial literacy and understanding as a way of reform.
What inspired you to start the Queening Mentorship Program?
“Honestly I was and still am concerned with the way black women are exploited and viewed through mass media outlets. Imaging is everything to our youth and social media, celebrities and TV has our young Queens thinking that certain behaviors are acceptable. Our youth need proper guidance and we are all responsible as a whole. Our community has to come together and make sure we are giving these children all the tools they need to be great and successful. At the end of the day they will be next up to lead, guide, influence and educate our communities.”
What are some ways you give back to the community?
“My free Queening mentorship program which empowers young black teen girls to go after their dreams by building self-confidence, self-love, respect, intelligence, drive and ambition. After completing our program they discover special powers and strength within themselves that they never knew they had. I also offer free credit repair and credit building workshops to our community. I have helped hundreds of people in my community become first time home buyers, and some of them are first generation homeowners.”
Do you feel like our black community doesn’t take the importance of good credit history serious enough?
“I feel like they don’t only because a lot of us have never been taught the importance of having good credit. There is a major lack of financial literacy in the black community. And a lot of us just don’t understand the basic fundamentals because we never received the information needed to obtain good credit or maintain it. And we usually discover that we need good credit to make major purchases and to gain access to capital to leverage and by that time its already too late.”
What are some initial steps to take for someone looking to repair their credit scores?
“Do a thorough review of your credit profile on all open, closed and derogatory accounts. Start disputing any negative accounts that are reporting inaccurately, start credit building ASAP to create some good positive payment history especially if you don’t have any active trade lines open and are currently reporting. You can also ask a trustworthy, responsible family member, friend or relative who cares about their own personal credit, who has excellent payment history to add you to a few of their revolving credit accounts as an authorized user.”
What are some of the benefits of utilizing credit verses cash?
“Most investors use financing or banking capital to invest, create residual income, or to expand their businesses. America is ran off of credit and if you do not understand credit at a young age you will more than likely fall behind. Credit if used the right way can create wealth. Once you understand the borrowing money to make money concept, you can begin to invest in ventures that will eventually produce more revenue and residual income. Credit can be the start of a strong financial portfolio. A 700 credit score is more valuable than $100,000 cash.”

Starbucks Corp. will now offer subsidized childcare for all of its U.S. employees. The new benefit, a partnership with childcare provider Care.com Inc., will provide 10 subsidized backup daycare days for parents for instances when regular care falls through. In-home backup childcare will cost $1 an hour or $2 an hour after the 4th child. Care at a daycare center will cost $5 per day.
“We felt like it was important to make this accessible,” said Ron Crawford, vice president of benefits at Starbucks. “We wanted to have as low a possible cost.” Unlike some of Starbucks’s other benefits, which require employees to work 20 hours before they can access them, Care@Work is available to more than 180,000 U.S. employees, regardless of how much they work.
This is awesome because parents pay almost as much for childcare as they do for rent, and when it falls through or there’s an unexpected day off from school or daycare, a parent either has to stay home or scramble to find a solution that may result in having to quit the job due to inconvenience. Subsidized childcare is a rare benefit. Only 2 percent of more than 3,000 employers surveyed by the Society of Human Resource Management in 2018 say they help employees pay for childcare fees. Only 4 percent offer backup child care services. All companies should offer help with childcare or even offer an onsite daycare service. With the way society is moving and more families working, its best companies go ahead and invest more into the job security of their employees by helping them to stay at work.
Retailers and restaurants have been trying to improve their perks to retain employees amid a very tight labor market. Amazon.com Inc. just announced it’s boosting wages to $15 an hour in November for its current and seasonal workers. In January, Starbucks committed to spend $250 million on new employee benefits, including a pay boost for domestic workers after the federal tax overhaul.
