A Few Quotes from Panel Discussions

#BlackGirlMagic

Don’t take no for an answer. Believe in yourself and have your own personal value—that’s how you will last in this industry for a long time.” – EnVogue

“To have black girl magic, it’s really recognizing that magic that’s in yourself first.” – Naturi Naughton

“Don’t let the brown [skin], don’t let the dark eyes, don’t let the natural hair stop you.” – Bernice Holmes

State of Black America: How to Make Our Voices Heard in this Political Climate

“None of us would have existed had it not been the backbone of our black women. Black women stood up and brought us back every time. We have got to be involved. We have to be sensitive to where we are—where we are with our voting rights, where we are with health care, where we are with gender rights?”  – Al Sharpton

“When I first began, my main objective was to just be good at rapping … but as time goes by, you start to realize that people are actually listening to you and you have things you want to say outside of music.” – Remy Ma

“It’s not easy. There’s not a short-term solution to handle things. You have to get into the trenches, you have to raise your voice as loud as you can even if sometimes you don’t understand what you’re fighting.” – Ashley G. Sharpton

Dating, Marriage, Love & The Internet: How to Make it All Work

“There’s too much of a stigma put on how you meet a person. God may use online dating more than he may use the church to bring you the right person because people can hide in church … find the person, however God brings them to you.” DeVon Franklin

“The worst mistake you can make is to get married before you know yourself.” Charreah K. Jackson

“The most important thing [about online dating] is honesty. You have to be honest” Kenya Moore

Living in The Gospel

“Let’s stop talking about what God can do and walk in what you can do. We should come to the table with everything he’s given us and let’s challenge each other in the church, so that we can use our skills, our talents for God to multiply that through obedience.” Dr. Stacie NC Grant

“We have to forgive debts for our debts to be forgiven. That’s the only way.” Brian Courtney Wilson

“You have to have time for God” Maranda Curtis

BET Sets ‘The Bobby Brown Story’ For Fall 2018 With Woody McClain Back In The Role of Bobby Brown!

Are we not in love enough with Woody McClain? He is officially the new Bobby and I’m loving it because he is an amazing actor. I can’t see nobody else playing Bobby Brown other than Woody McClain, so excellent decision by BET network. The actor, who played the R&B/pop singer in BET’s miniseries The New Edition Story, has signed to repeat his role in the network’s two-part followup, The Bobby Brown Story. Let me go on record to say that Woody has to be Bobby for every movie from now on that has something to do with the story of Bobby Brown! #WeLoveYouNewBobby

The movie is written by Abdul Williams and executive produced by Jesse Collins. The Bobby Brown Story will pick up where the New Edition mini series left off at. It will showcase the talented but troubled singer’s exit from the popular 80’s boy band on  through his solo career, his affair with Janet Jackson and tabloid-fodder marriage to pop icon Whitney Houston.  Covering thirty years of Brown’s life, the new project follows his story from the hard streets of Roxbury, where he turned to a life of drug dealing before being given the chance to prove himself as a solo artist. BET said The Bobby Brown Story also will be a story about redemption. Through sobriety, the singer learns to be a better man, husband and father. He even finds love again by remarrying in 2012. The casting for the movie is still under way for the other key players in The Bobby Brown Story, including Houston, Bobbi Kristina, Jackson, Teddy Riley, L.A. Reid, Babyface and others. McClain is repped by Henderson Represents, Luber Roklin Entertainment and Jackoway Tyerman.

For those who don’t know, Woody McClain was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and raised in Jacksonville, Florida before moving to Los Angeles in 2012 to pursue a career as a professional dancer. So of course it makes sense why he was able to nail those legendary Bobby Brown moves in the movie. He has since performed with numerous artists including Chris Brown and Fifth Harmony. After excelling in his career as a professional dancer, he began creating original social media content and noticed very quickly that he had a gift for making people laugh.

Woody also signed with Kevin Hart’s production company, ‘HartBeat Digital’, in December 2015 to produce content after his version of Hart’s “Permission to Cuss” skit went viral and caught Hart’s attention. Woody’s first venture into acting proved incredibly successful when he was sent to audition for BET’s The New Edition Story and booked the lead role, playing Bobby Brown. He will also be seen on the big screen in Canal Street playing “MayMay,” set to release in February 2018. His upcoming projects also include a role in USA’s series “Unsolved,” which is currently in production. Alongside his acting, Woody is currently executive producing his own creation titled Stories with Kev. He has teamed up with Kevin Hart for a streaming series in which he plays Kevin, based on Hart’s most iconic stories and stand-up bits. New episodes release every Friday on Hart’s #1-rated streaming video service, “Laugh Out Loud.”

2018 is going to be one amazing year for the handsome young actor and I’m grabbing my kettle flavored popcorn to tune in for every role!

Bobby Brown Loses In Court, TV One Airing ‘Bobbi Kristina’ Movie Anyway!

According to the theJasmineBRAND.com, Bobby Brown has failed at his legal attempt to stop TV One from airing the Bobbi Kristina movie. A judge ruled in the network’s favor. TV One states exclusively,

“Today the court rejected a motion for a preliminary injunction filed by Bobby Brown and the Estate of Bobbi Kristina Brown that sought to enjoin the network’s airing of the original movie, “Bobbi Kristina”. We are pleased with the court’s ruling and look forward to sharing this poignant look at the life of Bobbi Kristina Brown with our audience, Sunday, Oct. 8.”

Last month, Bobby was suing, seeking over $1,000,000 in damages, alleging that the movie contains scenes that show him being violent towards his late wife, singer Whitney Houston.

This is definitely one of the down sides of being in the spotlight, you can’t even stop a person from doing a movie about your own child. I’m sure Bobby is still dealing with the lost of his daughter and his ex-wife, now he has to see it aired on television as a reminder. That sucks.

Check out a preview of the movie below.

New Edition as kids!

The hottest series on television these past three days was the ‘New Edition Biopic!

There’s no other group in modern black music history as deserving of a biopic as New Edition, as their musical reign spanned over 3 decades.

All of the members of New Edition (Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, Ricky Bell and Ronnie DeVoe, as well as Johnny Gill, who joined the group after Bobby was voted out) signed on as co-producers.

That one fact gives insight as to why the biopic was so authentic and had such impressive detail, particularly in regards to wardrobe and production design.

From the very start of the series, we learn the struggle that these young boys encountered on their road to fame. What surprised many of us was the fact that they had to go through so much with bad record deals before they were able to eventually move out of the projects!

Talk about a long and rough journey.

The most difficult part of the group’s journey occurred when they had to vote Bobby Brown from the group! We all can admit that Bobby was a tough cookie to deal with as he grew into his teenage years. BET did an amazing job with allowing the members to display the true hurt behind having to do that. They grew up together and were really tough about keeping the group together despite Bobby and his habits getting out of control. Bobby Brown has always been ‘Bobby Brown’. The ‘bad boy’ of New Edition has always had a wild side and even sold drugs during his early days in the group.

It’s revealed in the movie that after an arrest in L.A. where Bobby was driving a corvette without a license, he had over $6,000 in cash on him! Despite being banished from the group, Bobby Brown ends up with a solo deal from MCA because he was still under contract.

But hey it’s his Prerogative right so Don’t be Cruel!

After watching this movie, we could understand some meanings behind his music that was produced after being booted out the group.

As the lead singer, Ralph is treated like a king, while the others are almost like his background dancers.  As expected, that causes strife within the group. Ralph becomes even more of a diva after Bobby is voted out and things come to a head when Brown gets his solo deal.

Everyone, including Ralph’s girlfriend, is hyping him up to go solo, so he begins working on his own music without telling the group.

Of course that strikes a nerve with the group and leads up to Mike Bivens adding a new edition, Johnny Gill, to sort of replace Ralph. I look at it as a smart way of reminding him that another person was just as talented as him out there and this calmed him down a bit with his ego.

Of course the industry is still shady for them!

Mike Bivens learns it first hand, which is why he’s become the brains behind the business of NE.  Bivens visits’ MCA to inquire about a production company that he’d never heard of that was listed on their album and finds out that their ‘manager’ is actually pocketing money from signing them.

Now we know why the group was still living in the projects… everyone was getting paid but them!

The final 2 hours of ‘The New Edition Story’ takes us through the groups demise and it’s subsequent rebuilding. After a chart topping album with NE Heartbreak, everyone is on cloud 9… including Bobby Brown who has a successful solo album. Fame takes hold and the group slowly disintegrates as lead singer Ralph Tresvant has been itching to release a solo project as well.

Meanwhile, label execs are in Johnny Gills ear promising that his vocal ability on a solo project is a no brainer and Ricky Bell, Mike Bivens and Ron Devoe are talked into creating a hip-hop trio by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. In the movie, this all transpires during a celebration for the success of the album and a drunken Bobby Brown takes it all in as he watches each conversation unfold from his seat.

He clearly realizes that the brotherhood of “New Edition” may be irretrievably broken as De La Soul’s classic ‘Me, Myself & I’ closes out the segment. The tour ends before anyone gets paid and all are left deep in debt after extravagant spending and travel costs. Brooke Payne can see that it’s not going to end well, as he watches it all unfold and states that they were more professional back when they were a boy band.

A topic that’s never really been revealed is that Ricky Bell was addicted to cocaine and alcohol.

The movie sheds quite a bit of light on his situation as it’s revealed he even kept his problem from his wife by hiding the drugs in a protein canister

Rick seemed to be the one who suffered the most after the group’s breakup and the cancellation of BBD’s tour. With no backup plan and a costly drug habit, he soon falls deeper in debt and even loses his home. He turns it all around by heading to rehab and admitting he has a problem with not only cocaine, but with ‘the feeling’ associated with fame, something he knows he may never have again. Despite the rough journey, The movie wraps up as New Edition takes the stage and it’s clear that the brotherhood of NE is 4Life!
