Black Panther Review: Greatest Inspiration Created By Marvel

Marvel: Black Panther

                                Written By: Tanisha D. Davis

Where do I begin to express how amazing this film was?

Let me first say that this film is everything that we imagined it would be, and well worth the wait. After seeing numerous trailers and watching countless interviews from the cast about what to expect from the film, I am well pleased that the long awaited anticipation was everything I hoped it would be. Outstanding job from the entire cast and the producers of this sensational film, that managed to ignite my mental in every way possible!

This film was filled with so much passion and emotion for the culture that was represented in this fictional African nation called, Wakanda. There were times when watching the battles that I myself was ignited with a fire deep within that yearned to be part of such a great nation as this fictional place. There was a powerful message that I discovered in the film that I was not expecting.

I imagined a battle that would take place among outsiders but realized later on that the largest battle was within for Wakanda. We had created a battle within ourselves because of a bad decision. We had left behind something that was part of us because we were afraid of what it could become, therefore creating a monster.

This message once discovered spoke volumes to my soul. As a young African American woman, my mind began to think about what all we as a nation of intelligent black people could have had if we had not grown up neglected away from our true culture, and who we really were before being stolen from our lands. We were lied to and taught to hate ourselves, therefore creating monsters within because we were not welcome or felt that we belonged anywhere. We were lost, awaiting the moment to be found or an opportunity to get back to where we came from.

There was pain, anger, and sympathy in the film for Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) because we all can relate to the feeling of growing up in a land separated from a royal nation of intelligent people. Imagine being of a royal background and being left out of the experience and lifestyle that you could have been living. Imagine being rich but what you see around you has taught you that you are poor and nothing.

Think on that. Imagine the anger that would build up inside you causing you to fight daily and be angry not because of where you are, but because you never knew that where you are right now, is not who you ever truly were created or born to be.

It made sense why he had spent so much time seeking a way to get back to his roots and claim a privilege that had been taken away from him without choice. Erik Killmonger is an example in many ways of black people in America.

Many of us are still fighting to identify ourselves and be restored back to the culture that we had stolen away from us.

This film made you think and long to be part of something greater than what you see around you everyday. It was action packed and the special effects were amazing!

There were scenes that made you emotional and almost lose hope, but only for a moment, as you watched on the edge of your seat in admiration of that hope being restored by watching the Black Panther rise and conquer!

Through this film we discover a passion to rise up and fight against anything that comes to take away our peace. We see a strong, powerful, and intelligent nation of people! The fictional nation of Wakanda was ready to battle each other and others to protect itself from the possible destruction of outsiders. There was a unity like no other!

I encourage everyone to go out to the theaters this weekend and experience this powerful historical film! This is by far the most inspirational black film created by Marvel, and I am very much in anticipation of a sequel, because something tells me that the world is about to know Wakanda and feel the power of the Black Panther!

Body Shaming Hurts No Matter Your Size: Skinny Girl Issues

“When it came down to my size, I felt like I just wasn’t beautiful because I didn’t look healthy enough in the eyes of my peers.” -Tanisha Davis

____________________________________________________________________

When we think of weight issues, many instantly think of women of a larger size that are possibly struggling with their weight. Honestly many will be surprised to know that there are skinny, or slim women who suffer from the anxiety of not being able to gain weight. We are constantly body shamed daily about our low weight and it’s not a good feeling. You will hear rude questions and comments constantly like, “Do you eat?”, “Girl you need to gain some weight,” and “Why are you at the gym?”.

Hearing these statements and questions has driven so many women to undergo surgery are to involve themselves in numerous amounts of medication and forced eating to try to gain weight that will be deemed “healthy” in the sight of others.

Today on Starrdom100 Radio I shared my personal experiences with being skinny as a young child and even how I deal with the issue today. My goal is to inspire young women who the world considers to be underweight and skinny to love yourself just the way God made you to be regardless of what anyone has to say.

Body shaming is a form of bullying and we as women need to stop shaming one another because of our size and learn to embrace our differences.

Starrdom100’s ‘Bright’ Review: If You Love Fantasy Then It’s Worth Watching!

Will Smith, Joel Edgerton

Bright, is about an alternate present day, humans, orcs, elves and fairies have been coexisting since the beginning of time. Two police officers, one a human, the other an orc, embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a young female elf and a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which, in the wrong hands, could destroy everything. The movie released today, December 22 on Netflix, created on a 90 million budget, and of course some bad reviews about the movie instantly filled media sites.

The movie was directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, writer of Training Day) and stars Will Smith (Ward, a human) and  Joel Edgerton (Jakoby, an orc). Critics have claimed the movie to be a waste however after watching the movie I have discovered a very opposite look at the movie.

For one, I love the whole idea of fantasy mixed with action and this sci-fi thriller was able to hold my attention. Seeing Will Smith in this role reminded me of him in the popular movie, “Men In Black” where he played a police officer who joins a secret organization that polices and monitors extraterrestrial interactions on Earth. Here he is yet again in a similar role yet in a world where all of these creatures from the fantasy world we have read about in books, exist.

The start of the movie reminds me of the opening to the film, Independence Day where Smith is seen greeting his family, and then there is a crazy scene where he has to kill a fairy. I will admit there are some odd parts in the script but it just makes for a few good laughs along the way. The partnership between Smith and Edgerton is quite amusing and watching them interact as they discover that they are now destined to fulfill a long awaited prophecy is quite interesting.  Honestly you would have to love fantasy and enjoy how the director brings this movie into a modern day action thriller.

I saw all the bad reviews and I had to check this movie out for myself to see why it was getting so many bad reviews. I’m glad that I watched the movie.

The movie also displayed some strong messages, where you see the cruel treatment towards the orc played by Joel Edgerton, who decides to become a police officer. To me, it displayed the harsh reality of racism today in the workforce when you are different from others. The orcs in the movie are considered to be corrupt and bad guys and there is even a scene where the police are seen beating a bunch of orcs and Smith ask’s him whether he is an orc or an officer. Makes you think of what some of a different race have to deal with on today’s police force or society period.  The elves are a bunch of rich fancy people with nice cars living in a separate division from the others, so go figure on who would be presumed as the elves in our world today.  The fairies are far from anything special because people want them killed as if they are the rodents of the society. Sorry Tinker Bell fans because the fairies are not the good guys or gals in this movie.

Yet with all of the crazy plots of the movie, you manage to see two officers set aside their differences and come together to do something positive for the world. They also learn more about themselves and their purpose through near death experiences and the discovery of a magic they never knew existed.

Will Smith and Joel Edgerton are hilarious in the movie, and regardless of a few twists in the storyline that take it away from being perfect in the eyes of major critics, I believe the message was never to display a perfect movie because the world they reside in is far from perfect. It’s interesting, it is fantasy, and it gets five stars in my book and I’m looking forward to a sequel from Netflix, which sources state that one has already been ordered.

So go watch the movie & enjoy!

Ayo & Teo (Ayleo and Mateo Bowles) are a duo of American dancers who have appeared in music videos for Usher’s “No Limit” and Chris Brown’s “Party”. Their song “Rolex” peaked at number 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100. These two siblings built a rapid online following by posting videos of themselves dancing to the hottest new songs and inviting fans to do their best takes.

In a recent interview on The Domenick Nati Show today, the duo discussed owning a rolex, their celebrity crushes, and more!

Of course since their popular song, “Rolex” was a major hit, some probably wondered if the company for Rolex had even considered contacting the duo for bringing them so much exposure. That question from Domenick of course brought a few laughs as they gave their response stating, “We wish…I think somebody with our management team reached out to them and that didn’t work out.”
