Movie Review: Netflix’s Birdbox

Bird Box is the latest new Netflix horror-thriller based on a novel by Josh Malerman and directed by Susanne Bier. In this post-apocalyptic world, to take the blindfolds off would be to risk insanity and even death. The cast for the film included, Sandra Bullock, and co-star Trevante Rhodes. Joining Bullock and Rhodes in Bird Box’s ensemble were Sarah Paulson, Rosa Salazar, BD Wong, John Malkovich, Machine Gun Kelly, Tom Hollander, David Dastmalchian, Danielle Macdonald, Jacki Weaver and Lil Rel Howery.

Now like many I was drawn to the film after seeing a host of responses about how amazing this film was. As a movie lover and lover of horror-thriller movies myself, I felt it was time to turn off the lights and cuddle up to watch this film.

I won’t spoil the film by giving you all the massive details of every scene because I want viewers to at least watch the film to gather their own opinion of the movie.

After seeing this movie, I felt the film was a bit rushed and that the story-line could have been better, especially with a 19.8 million dollar budget.

You have this amazing cast and yet the story line is moving so fast with not enough details. There’s this unseen being that the victims see and it manifests as their worst fear, then they kill themselves immediately.

There is never any full information on how to defeat whatever it is they are witnessing other than to simply blindfold themselves.

We don’t even know where this thing came from, it just appears to be jumping across the nation. The movie ends up coming off as a bit predictable, comical and even disappointing.

You have this group of people who have managed to survive this unseen being and they are gathered in a house and then there comes a scene where suddenly one guy is able to kill just about everyone in the home. Not the unseen being…but one guy who has suddenly been taken over after desiring to see whatever it is that takes over the mind. The problem I have with that is, how is he suddenly able to avoid committing suicide like everyone else who has seen this “being”?

The movie portrays the thought that if you see this “being”…you lose your mind and immediately commit suicide. Yet this one guy is able to walk around the house after seeing it and aides in helping to kill the remaining people in the home, with the only survivors being Bullock and Rhodes.

The movie then speeds up and years have gone by and suddenly the two are in love and raising two kids and learning to survive. There is also a group who are just like the guy in the past scene who can walk around normal after seeing this “being” and then down goes Rhodes in the film.

Scene from Netflix’s BirdBox

Bullock is now left to survive with the two kids and travel down a river to a location for safety and survival from this unseen being. Upon arrival, the movie is pretty much over.

So what’s next for the survivors in this protected place? They basically just live with birds tweeting around them and this “being” still on the loose. The movie almost reminds me of “The Quiet Place”, even though we were at least able to see what they were afraid of.

I truly expected more from this film because of the amazing cast and with a title like BirdBox, I suppose I was expecting to see maybe attacks from birds or maybe a disease from the birds that was causing people to go insane. The only thing we casually discover in the film is that the birds make a lot of noise when the being is nearby.

I was not thrilled or amazed by this film at all. The entire time I was desperately waiting for more to emerge from the scenes. I honestly would love to see someone remake this film as it seems it has much potential to be a great film with the right story-line.

Nooo!! Pineapples! Kevin Hart Steps Down From Hosting Oscars???

Wednesday afternoon, comedian Kevin Hart announced that he would be the host  for the upcoming 91st annual Academy Awards. However after a lot of controversy over some past tweets the comedian made, by Thursday night, he had stepped down.

This all happened over previous anti-gay tweets, and comments Hart made during stand-up routines nearly 10 years ago. Some of the tweets were deleted throughout the day on Thursday, leading to an Instagram video from the comedian that only made matters worse.

“My team calls me, ‘Oh my God, Kevin, everyone’s upset by tweets you did years ago,’” he said in that video. “Guys, I’m nearly 40 years old. If you don’t believe that people change, grow, evolve as they get older, I don’t know what to tell you. If you want to hold people in a position where they always have to justify the past, do you. I’m the wrong guy, man.”

Stop looking for reasons to be negative…Stop searching for reasons to be angry….I swear I wish you guys could see/feel/understand the mental place that I am in. I am truly happy people….there is nothing that you can do to change that…NOTHING. I work hard on a daily basis to spread positivity to all….with that being said. If u want to search my history or past and anger yourselves with what u find that is fine with me. I’m almost 40 years old and I’m in love with the man that I am becoming. You LIVE and YOU LEARN & YOU GROW & YOU MATURE. I live to Love….Please take your negative energy and put it into something constructive. Please….What’s understood should never have to be said. I LOVE EVERYBODY…..ONCE AGAIN EVERYBODY. If you choose to not believe me then that’s on you….Have a beautiful day

Those words were considered to be a non-apology for some. Hours later, Hart resurfaced with another video stating that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had given him an ultimatum: Apologize or we’ll find a new host.

“I chose to pass on the apology,” the 39-year-old actor-comedian said in the video. “The reason why I passed is because I’ve addressed this several times. This is not the first time this has come up. I’ve addressed it. I’ve spoken on it. I’ve said where the rights and wrongs were. I’ve said who I am now versus who I was then. I’ve done it. I’m not going to continue to go back and tap into the days of old when I’ve moved on and I’m in a completely different place in my life.”

Less than two hours later, Hart announced via Twitter that he was removing himself from the opportunity, and apologized.

“I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscars,” he wrote. “This is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past. I’m sorry that I hurt people. I am evolving and want to continue to do so. My goal is to bring people together not tear us apart. Much love and appreciation to the Academy. I hope we can meet again.”

The lesson in this story is that you have to always be wise about what you say, but at the same time, never say anything that will come back to haunt you. Honestly I was looking forward to seeing Kevin host the Oscars just as much as I was when Chris Rock hosted. I just knew there was going to be a ton of jokes to make the show worth watching. I think we live in a world where we can forgive and maybe the Academy should forgive and allow Kevin to still host the Oscars! That’s just my opinion so who knows.

We are so quick to bring up the past of others but how many of us have a past? I’m sure no one in Hollywood is perfect and I’m sure every individual there has done something in the dark that they don’t want the world to know. This man has proven that he has changed and matured since 10 years ago. I’m so tired of people acting like they are so perfect. None of us are who we were 10 years ago!  In the most recent video below with Steve Harvey, he states that he loves everybody!

It’s time we stop searching for reasons to create negativity. I hate to say it but we have become such a sensitive society overall. We want everyone to basically be clones when it comes to their thoughts and opinions. True enough, I don’t agree with dissing anyone based off of their sexuality but we have got to let people be human and have their own personal opinions without forcing our ways upon them. This man has every right to feel however he felt 10 years ago but now he is a family man and he has learned his lesson from making bad mistakes. I’m not saying he is perfect because I don’t know him personally but what I am saying is that the bible says we all have fell short of the glory and that a good man falls several times. I applaud that even though he fell a few times…the man got up and owned his mistakes. I say to the Academy Awards crew…let this man host the Oscars so we can have a great show! We all make mistakes…how dare we demand someone to suffer today for what they did 10 years ago?!

Kevin Hart to Host 91st Oscars

“It would be the honor of a lifetime for me as a comedian,” said Kevin Hart.

Actor and comedian Kevin Hart will emcee the 91st Academy Awards telecast on February 24, 2019. The comedian announced the news Tuesday afternoon on his Instagram account.

For years I have been asked if I would ever Host the Oscars and my answer was always the same…I said that it would be the opportunity of a lifetime for me as a comedian and that it will happen when it’s suppose to. I am so happy to say that the day has finally come for me to host the Oscars. I am blown away simply because this has been a goal on my list for a long time….To be able to join the legendary list of host that have graced that stage is unbelievable. I know my mom is smiling from ear to ear right now. I want to thank my family/friends/fans for supporting me & riding with me all this time….I will be sure to make this years Oscars a special one. I appreciate the @TheAcademy for the opportunity ….now it’s time to rise to the occasion #Oscars

A post shared by Kevin Hart (@kevinhart4real) on

The star is emceeing the event for the first time. First-time producers Donna Gigliotti and Glenn Weiss will oversee the show, with Gigliotti serving as producer and Weiss on hand as co-producer and director.

Earlier on Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had held talks with the comedian about hosting the February ceremony.

“I appreciate @TheAcademy for the opportunity,” wrote Hart in his post, adding, “For years I have been asked if I would ever Host the Oscars and my answer was always the same…I said that it would be the opportunity of a lifetime for me as a comedian and that it will happen when it’s suppose to.”

The last two Oscar shows were hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and produced by Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd. But each year ratings declined, with a record-low 26.5 million viewers tuning in for last March’s broadcast, which adds to the pressure the new team will face in mounting the kudocast.

The Academy, which has promised that the show won’t run over three hours, has already announced one change — not all the awards in the 24 Oscar categories will be revealed live. Instead, six to eight categories will be announced before the audience at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood during commercial breaks, and edited excerpts from the acceptances will be aired later in the broadcast.

In August, the Academy’s board also recommended the creation of a new award, a so-called “popular” Oscar, that it said would recognize “outstanding achievement in popular film,” ensuring that some of the biggest box office successes of the year have a prominent place at the awards. But that idea met with so much resistance that the Academy shelved it a month later.

Hart previously hosted the MTV Movie Awards along with his Central Intelligence co-star Dwayne Johnson. He has publicly spoken about wanting to host the Oscars since at least 2015, when he told the morning show Live With Kelly and Michael (now Live With Kelly and Ryan) that he was actively campaigning to get the role. “That would be a major accomplishment. With what I’ve done and the progress I’ve made in my career, that’s definitely the next major step, I feel, for a comedian,” Hart said to the hosts at the time.

The Oscars will air live on Sunday, Feb. 24, on ABC.
